At MACHAO
The Machao Orphanage is located in Makueni, Kenya (about 3.5 hours south east of Nairobi). Makueni county is located in the southern part of Eastern province and borders Kitui to the east, Taita Taveta to the south, Kajiado to the west and Machakos to the north. The county covers an area of 8008.8 kms and comprises of eight districts namely Makueni, Mukaa, Mbooni East, Mbooni West, Kilungu, Nzaui, Kibwezi and Kathonzweni. It has three local authorities which are Wote and Mtito Andei town councils and Makueni county council. It has five constituencies which are Kaiti, Kibwezi, Kilome, Makueni and Mbooni.

Temperatures and rainfall:
Temperatures in the county range from a minimum of 12° C to a maximum of 28° C and rainfall ranges from 150 mm to 650 mm per annum, typical of ASALs in Kenya.

Population:
The county has a population of 884,527 composed of 49 % male and 51 % female and has a population density of 100.4 people per km. The age distribution is 0-14 years (43.%), 15-64 years (51.1%), 65+ years (5.2%). Total number of households is 186,478. The population living below the poverty line is 34% and 67% of urban and rural population respectively.

Natural resources and economic activities:
Resources found in the county consist of forests, wildlife, minerals, building sand, water (rivers), pasture and land. The main economic activities are subsistence agriculture, beekeeping, small-scale trade, dairy farming and limited coffee growing; Ecotourism; Commercial businesses, Agricultural products comprise of fruits (mangoes, paw paws, watermelons), maize, cow peas, beans,pigeon peas and lentils, livestock keeping and dairy farming.

Health:
The infant mortality rates in this county are 46/1000 live births and under-five mortality rates are 84/1000. The prevalent diseases are malaria, respiratory infections and HIV/AIDS.
